Healing and the Chakras
Crystals themselves radiate psychic energies and so they are especially effective for chakra work. They can, simply by being held close to a chakra point, release blockages and cleanse and empower the entire system. The more you use your crystals for personal chakra healing, the more they become attuned to your own bodily and spiritual rhythms, positively influencing your moods and energy flows. With this in mind, some people prefer to keep a special set of seven chakra crystals in a small bag for their personal use, with a few sprigs of fresh rosemary or sage that can be replaced at regular intervals to keep the life force flowing.
Each chakra, or energy centre, is linked with a particular crystals or colour that can balance deficiencies or clear blockages in the physical and psychic body, and each chakra is also linked to a particular area of the body and mind. When the chakras are balanced and healthy, their colours are clear and luminous and they rotate smoothly. These colours can be seen clairvoyantly in the auric field or sometimes as glowing centres within the body. When there is some physical imbalance or illness, pain or tension may be felt only in one place or not at all. However, the psychic energy centres reflect a wider view of the state of health, and so can show the source of the trouble, sometimes even before it is manifest on a physical level, offering a “fast track” to healing. So the chakras are like an early warning system, and crystal healing of the chakras that are blocked can stop problems before they have even started to develop fully.
I will talk about what is generally accepted as the seven major chakras.
The root chakra, or maladhara
Colour Red
The root, or base chakra is associated with physical functioning, basic instincts and the five physical senses. Physical pain and discomfort are manifest at this level. Pain and fever appear as a murky red in the afflicted area of the body or at the source of the infection, or will be reflected in the aura.
This chakra is rooted at the base of the spine, around the perineum, seat of the kundalini or base energy source. It is linked with the legs, feet, skeleton and large intestine.
The root chakra uses red, raw energy to overcome fearsome odds and offers courage to make any necessary changes in your life. Blockages can be reflected in problems with legs, feet and bones, and in bowel discomfort. On a psychological level, unreasonable anger at a trivial causes can be a symptom of malfunction.
The sacral chakra, or svadisthana
Colour Orange
This chakra is associated with spontaneous feelings and urges rather than consciously directed emotions; it is also linked to self-esteem and the emerging self-identity.
Though seated in the reproductive system, and so linked with fertility, it focuses on aspects of comfort or satisfaction, such as eating, drinking and sexuality. It controls the blood, reproductive system, kidneys, circulation and bladder. The sacral chakra is the sphere of desire, the chakra of sensual pleasure and happiness. Blockages can be reflected in problems with the reproductive system, bladder and circulatory system. On a psychological level, problems will result in irritability and disorders involving physical indulgence.
The solar plexus chakra, or manipura
Colour Yellow
This chakra is associated with the conscious mind, logic and mental power and control. It is seated around the navel, although some traditions place it slightly higher, between the navel and chest. It controls digestion, the liver, spleen, stomach and small intestine. The solar plexus chakra is the chakra of personal power, will and independence. This is the energy centre of digesting experiences, taking what is of use from life and casting aside what is redundant, so creating our sense of integrity and uniqueness. Blockages in this area may be reflected in ulcers, indigestion, yellowy skin, feelings of nausea, and liver, gall-bladder, spleen and stomach problems. Eating disorders, where the balance of eating is upset and food necessary for strength and growth becomes attached to an emotional trigger (anorexia and bulimia are typical examples), also have their seat here.
On a psychological level, malfunction can lead to obsessions and over-concern for trivial details.
The heart chakra, or anahata
Colour Green
This chakra is associated with relationships and with emotional stability and harmony within the self as well as with others. It is situated in the centre of the chest, with its energies radiating over heart, lungs, breasts, arms and hands. The heart chakra is the centre of altruism, compassion, unconditional love, sympathy and connection with both people and the environment, especially the natural world. Healing powers emanate from this chakra, especially when natural points of focus such as crystals and herbs are used. Blockages can be reflected in heart palpitations, hyperventilation, cough and colds, lung problems and ailments in the hands and arms.
On a psychological level, free-floating anxiety or depression can stem from an imbalance in this area.
The throat chakra, or vishuddha
Colour Blue
This chakra is associated with communications and idealism, the synthesis of emotion and thought. It is situated close to the Adam’s apple in the centre of the neck. As well as the throat, speech organs and thyroid gland, the throat chakra controls the neck and shoulders and the passages that run up to the ears. The throat chakra is the gateway between a personal and a more global perspective; it controls ideas, ideals, listening, speaking and giving creative form to thoughts. Blockages may show themselves as frequent sore throats, colds, swollen glands and thyroid problems. They can also be reflected in problems with the neck, shoulders, speech organs, mouth, jaw, teeth and throat. On a psychological level, confusion and incoherence result from an imbalance here.
The brow chakra, or savikalpa samadhi
Colours Purple/indigo
This chakra, also known as the third eye, is associated with unconscious wisdom and psychic powers, especially clairvoyance but also clairaudience and mediumistic abilities.
It is situated just above the bridge of the nose in the centre of the brow and controls the eyes, ears and both hemispheres of the brain. The brow chakra is the centre of inspiration and of awareness of a world beyond the material and immediate. At this level you may communicate with your higher self and your angelic and spirit guides and be able to see into past worlds. With the opening of this chakra, your healing powers take on a spiritual dimension, drawing on higher power. In your everyday life the power of this chakra is manifest as a highly sensitised intuitive awareness. When this chakra is not functioning properly, you may experience a lot of headaches, earache, noises in your ears, eye infections or temporary blurring of the vision that has no organic cause. On a psychological level, insomnia or nightmares can result from malfunction.
The crown chakra, or nirvakelpa samadhi
Colour Violet, seen merging with white light pouring in from the cosmos
This chakra is associated with the merging of the spirit with the source of Divinity and with perfection in human terms.
The crown chakra is situated at the centre of the top of the head and rules the brain, body and psyche, as well as growth and well being on physical, mental and spiritual levels. It is the centre of evolved creative and spiritual energy, the state in which mystical experiences occur, and represents pure spiritual awareness. Blockages can be reflected in problems with the sinuses, skin and scalp, and general viruses and infections in the whole body that do not clear. You may feel tired but unable to relax, worried but unable to focus your actions on solutions.
On a psychological level, an inability to rise above everyday and material concerns, and a rigid attitude can result from a problem with this chakra.
We can help ourselves through our own personal power of healing and by using crystals and colour to help ourselves along the way of improving our well being.
